This week’s blog post is inspired by Benjamin Moore’s 2023 Color of the Year; Raspberry Blush. This vibrant shade of coral is sure to bring new life to any room. But why stop there? Try this color out on a thrifted find to create a new statement piece guaranteed to become the focal point of any room.
Prep work trifecta: Drop cloth, windows, swatch.
While this may not be the most exciting step, it’s one you won’t want to skip. Drop cloths protect your floors (painting is messy), open windows reduce paint fumes, and a color swatch will help ensure you’re going to love the new color you’ve chosen. Pro-tip: when swatching your paint, be sure to try it out in an inconspicuous area (like the back) and allow to dry fully before moving forward. Also keep in mind that paint looks different depending on the room and time of day.
Step 1: Hardware & repair
Remove all existing hardware and place into a plastic bag for safe keeping if you plan to reuse or refinish (See step 5 for hardware ideas). Locate and lightly sand any gouges you want to repair, and fill with a paintable wood filler. Let dry completely before proceeding to the next step.
Step 2: Sand it
Sand all surfaces using a medium-grit sandpaper and a sanding block. Buffing the surface gives the paint something to stick to and will reduce the likelihood of flaking down the road. When you’re satisfied with your sanding, make sure to wipe down the entire piece with a damp lint-free rag to remove any dust.
Step 3: Prime it
Primer is the unsung hero of any DIY paint project. This gives the new paint a neutral base and will ensure an even color application and keep any existing stains from peeking through. Apply a coat of primer on all surfaces you plan to paint using a foam roller for even application, and a brush for any nooks and crannies. Allow to dry completely. Stop by your local Kenyon Noble paint counter to find the right primer for your project.
Step 4: Time for paint!
It’s time to crack open that can of Raspberry Blush and give it a good stir. Pour into your paint tray and get to work! We recommend starting with a paintbrush, getting into corners and details where a paint roller isn’t going to reach. After that, work your way from top to bottom with your roller to catch any drips and give you a nice smooth finish. Allow to dry completely before repeating the process.
Once you’re satisfied with your paint coverage, the paint has dried, and your hardware replaced, you can start enjoying your new dresser!
Step 5: Hardware
There are three options for hardware when it comes to refinishing a piece of furniture: use them as-is, refinish them, or replace them.
As-is: The hardware is great just the way it is, and you think it’ll look great with the new color. That’s perfectly okay! But before you put them back on the dresser, we recommend giving them a good cleaning. Soak them in hot water with a little dish soap and scrub them with a small brush (an old toothbrush will do!) and set aside to dry. If they’re tarnished, try a tarnish remover to get them looking like new.
Refinish: With a bold color like Raspberry Blush, dark colors like Leather Brown or Gloss Black will really transform the entire vibe of this new-to-you piece. We recommend a Paint + Primer spray paint for an easy and durable application. Set your hardware on a scrap piece of cardboard and apply light coats until you have the coverage you’re looking for, allowing to dry completely in between coats.
Replace: Sometimes the furniture is great, but the hardware is broken, missing, or just doesn’t match your style. Stop in to your local Kenyon Noble location and explore a wide variety of options for you to choose from. Pro-tip: bring in your old hardware to make sure the mounting holes match up! If they don’t, you can fill the holes during Step 1 and drill new ones.
